Costa Brava Towns Pass Third Night Without Power
Posted on 11 March 2010 by admin
The majority of LLoret de Mar residents last night spent their third night without electricity. Sixteen huge generators have been bought in by the electricity company, but arrived too late in the day to be installed.
However they will only help a very small proportion of the population. The mayor of Lloret, Xavier Crespo yesterday expressed anger that a tourist town such as Lloret should be left for so long without basic services. There are currently around 13,000 tourists holidaying in the town.
An electric line that supplies Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar, has been completely severed and it is likely the emergency situation will continue for several days.
As the generators began arriving, the town hall warned it would only be a lucky few who would receive electricity. Most of the town yesterday passed the third night without electricity.
Lloret also has problemas with the telephone lines. Both land lines and mobile networks are down, a few zones have limited and intermittent mobile coverage.
Tossa’s telephone service was mainly restored by yesterday afternoon, however Tossa residents remain without electricity. The mayoress Imma Colom is said to be outraged and has travelled to Girona to demand generators for at least the hospital and the Old People’s home.
By yesterday evening the hospital had some power restored but only to the most needy areas.
In the outlying residential areas the situation is much worse. Even though the snow was melting somewhat yesterday, many trees and telephone posts are completely blocking the roads. The army was called in to Vidreres to help with clearing roads, but many people are still completely blocked from all services and have no possibilities of travelling.
Other areas still affected by the freak blizzard include Santa Coloma, Massanet, VilobÃ, Riells and Viabrea, Massana, Riudarenes, Riudellots and Sils. Schools continue to be closed.
Residents in parts of Vilobà have no electricity, water or telephone.
